About the Composer
Ron Hancock is an American-born composer, arranger and performer living Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He earned a bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1993 and moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue a career in the Music and Entertainment industry.With his degree emphasis in Arts Administration, Hancock accepted a marketing position with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as his first position out of college.
After some time with the ASO, he left to explore other management opportunities in the music industry including managerial roles at Tower Records and Borders Books & Music. In his subsequent 20-year career in Atlanta, he had the opportunity to work with a number of pop music industry celebrities including: Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, The Indigo Girls, Al Jerreau, Jody Watley, Dionne Warwick, Judy Collins and Janis Ian. Classical music industry celebs included: Van Cliburn, Joshua Bell, Robert Spano, Robert McDuffie, Lang Lang and NPR commentator, Ted Libbey. Celebrity authors include: Fannie Flagg, Joel Siegel, Nikki Giovanni, Paula Deen, Alton Brown, Anthony Bourdain, Rabbi Harold Kushner, Christine Farris King and Dexter King. Other celebs who round out the highlights include: Actor/Activist, Jane Fonda, Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, and President Jimmy Carter.
While in Atlanta, Hancock was active in the music scene as a performing member and teaching assistant in the Emory University Early Music Ensemble and it's later incarnation - Lauda Musicam of Atlanta. He was a founding member of the Sforzandi Chamber Ensemble, and has served as president and music director of the Atlanta chapter of the American Recorder Society.
At the age of 45, Hancock made a career change which allowed him to move back to Mississippi, purchase his own business and have more time to write new music. As a contemporary composer/arranger, Hancock has created a number of works, both period and modern, for the aforementioned ensembles. His enthusiasm and admiration of Early Music is evidenced in his modern compositions as he often incorporates modal and motivic compositional techniques into his writing.
